Ottawa Fury FC made another big splash this week with the signing of English midfielder Ryan Williams, pending ITC, the club announced on Tuesday. Williams, who has a reputation as a free kick specialist, made a name for himself in the Welsh Premier League that resulted in moves to Morecambe (League Two), Brentford (Championship) and most recently Inverness of the Scottish Premier League.
“He’s a really creative midfielder and a specialist on set pieces,” said head coach Paul Dalglish. “With the amount of targets that we have to hit, we needed to make sure that the delivery in the box is the best that it can possibly be and that’s exactly what Ryan offers us. I think the North American style of soccer will suit him perfectly and I believe he will be a very good fit for us.”
The 25-year-old has spent the last few months with Scottish Premiership side Inverness following a seven month stint with English Championship side Brentford. Before signing with Brentford, the 5-foot-8 midfielder spent a three-year period at League Two club Morecambe scoring six goals.
Williams came through Chester City’s youth system and after signing with Colwyn Bay he built his reputation in the Welsh second division while on loan at Llandudno and with Rhyl. In 51 career games in Wales, Williams tallied 23 goals with several coming from his dead-ball prowess.
The native of Birkenhead, England also has futsal experience having played for Tranmere Victoria and Liverpool and was named in the England squad for the 2010 FA Futsal Four Nations Tournament.
